EU’s Asylum Policy and Human Security

The question of how to respond to the increased number of asylum seekers has posed significant challenges to the European Union and created political tensions in several member states. The responses to the situation have sparked a great deal of heated debate within EU member countries, including Finland.

The aim of SaferGlobe’s project “The European Union’s Asylum Policy and Human Security” is, on one hand, to produce high-quality and unbiased information about the EU’s and its member states’ responses to the so-called refugee crisis. On the other hand, our goal is to bring the perspectives of comprehensive security and human security into the discussion about the EU’s asylum policy.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted the project state funding for NGOs’ European communications for the year 2018.

Three Policy Briefs have been published as part of the project:

  • The European Union’s Asylum Policy and Comprehensive Security
  • Causes of Insecurity for Those Seeking Asylum in the EU in Their Countries of Origin and During Their Journey
  • The European Union’s Asylum Policy and Comprehensive Security – External Dimension

A discussion event was organized at Eurooppasali on November 28, 2018, as part of the project. At the event, SaferGlobe researchers Johannes Lehtinen and Kari Paasonen presented the key findings of the project. A panel discussion was also held, featuring Simo Kohonen, Regional Coordinator of the International Organization for Migration; Annikki Vanamo-Alho from the Ministry of the Interior’s Immigration Department; Kaisa Korhonen, Legal Expert from Amnesty International’s Finnish Section; and SaferGlobe’s Johannes Lehtinen. The panel discussion was moderated by Kari Paasonen.
