Euroopanlinna – High School Students Learn the Significance of Free Movement Through Simulation

SaferGlobe participated in the Euroopanlinna project coordinated by the European Movement Finland. In the project, a simulation was conducted where about one hundred upper secondary school students had to reach Suomenlinna, which in the simulation had declared itself an independent Grand Duchy.

The purpose of the project and the simulation was to enhance the participants’ understanding of borders and free movement, which is one of the key dimensions of European integration. SaferGlobe produced a background paper on the EU, borders, and free movement for the project, which was distributed to the simulation participants as background information and a basis for discussion.

Overall, the feedback collected from teachers about the event was extremely positive, and there was a desire for the event to be organized again. The young participants were also very satisfied with both the materials and the event itself but hoped for an even deeper simulation and more intense situations.

In addition to SaferGlobe, European Movement Finland’s partners in the project were Securitas, the Finnish Border Guard, the Finnish Red Cross, and JEF Finland.
