SaferGlobe’s report “Nordic Arms Transfer Controls and the Arms Trade Treaty: Strengths and Challenges”provides new insights into the effectiveness of Nordic countries’ arms export control systems and the impact of the international Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), which came into force in December 2014, on their activities. The purpose of the study was to identify good arms control practices and tools from the Nordic countries to meet future challenges in arms control and to support the global implementation of the international Arms Trade Treaty.
To support the production of the research report and promote its visibility, two events were organized in Helsinki on April 14: a morning roundtable discussion among authorities and other experts, and an afternoon public seminar “Arms Control in Fragile Contexts – Horn of Africa.” The events were attended by a total of about 80 experts and other interested members of the public. The afternoon seminar also included representatives of the Finnish media, and it was reported on both TV news and in the press.
The project’s final report was presented at a lunchtime seminar during the first Conference of States Parties to the UN Arms Trade Treaty, held in Cancun, Mexico, from August 24–27, to which all conference participants were invited. The results were also presented at a security dialogue on the Arms Trade Treaty organized by the OSCE’s Forum for Security Co-operation (FSC) in September 2015. The project was the first of its kind internationally and received an enthusiastic reception.
