In the end of December, international scientific journal Peace Economics, Peace Science and Public Policy published article Are the unhappy unemployed to blame for unrest? Scrutinising participation in the Arab Spring uprisings authored by Kari Paasonen, SaferGlobe’s Acting Executive Director.
Based on Paasonen’s research, the role of unemployment behind the Arab Spring appears to be less significant than generally assumed. Results show that compared to the employed, the unemployed have not participated more often in the Arab Spring protests or protests in general. In some cases, the unemployed have been less active protesters than the employed. Results are drawn from the analysis of some 25 000 respondents of Arab Barometer and World Values Survey data.
